Almerimar - October 2018
Hi Folks..... For our Winter Blog we thought we would try and change things a little from the norm to shake things up and keep it interesting for one and all. So we thought it over and will now be making a weekly blog post on a Wednesday. We're both going to write a little each time about what we've been up to, so a report from each one of us for the week.
Wednesday 24th October...
LINDA - 5 days in our new home and we're settling down nicely. We had a bit of a shock to the system on Saturday and Sunday as it blew a gale for 48 hours with winds up to 35 knots. Not the best welcome to Almerimar and so we stayed indoors on Saturday with the heater on. It took us a while to remember where we had put the heater! Hope the weather isn't like this all winter, although it was still warm outside to be fair. Dean checked out the Chandleries, then he got fed up, bored, and grumpy. I'm sure he'll be OK once he gets stuck into a Thesee job or two.
Nevertheless, regardless of the wind on Sunday, it didn't stop us having a good look around the place and took a very long walk along the promenade. It's great for walkers, runners, cyclists, and dogs off lead. Finally Saffy you can roam free. There are a fair few bars and restaurants still open and trading, so we stopped off for Sunday Lunch at the 'Stumble Inn'. Ooohhh yum yum.
Since then the weather has improved enormously again and it's really very pleasant especially when the sun is out. Average temp about 23 degrees. We went to see the Capitania and have paid up until the end of Feb 2019, getting a 25% discount for staying over 3 months. A very good deal we think. We are very happy with our allocated berth. It's inside the security gates and alongside a very wide concrete quay. Plenty wide enough for Saffy to escape along the passarelle and have a wander about. We've met up with our friends again, Ant & Cid (plus doggies Oscar & Lady). Their boat is called Impavidus and we first met them way back in North Spain. They're here for the winter too. We've also been getting to find out about the 'Almerimar Yachting Community'. This place is well known for winter liveaboards and they have socials etc going on we've been told.

We've hired a car for tomorrow because i'm flying back to the UK from Malaga for 10 days to visit family and friends. Very excited about that. Thinking about it, getting here took over 5 months, and in 3 hours i will be back where i started! That's ridiculous. Next weeks blog will be all down to Dean so i hope he'll be keeping some notes.
Palm Trees on the Promenade
Freedom to roam in safety as long as she stays off this cycle route
Great day for the windsurfers
Nice surroundings to look at
Real food at last. This place could well become our local.
They do rhubarb crumble too.
Thesee's berth inside the gates, a few down on the right.
Local footpaths
More apartments here
Shopping isn't what it used to be.
Just take a trolley from the marina and bring it back again. Simples!
DEAN - It takes a little getting used to the fact that we are stationary now. Anyway at least it gives me some time to get a few jobs done around the boat. The engine needs servicing which normally would be a straight forward job but of course you cant get to anything easily! I've already re-varnished the flag pole and the dinghy oars as they were all looking a bit tatty.
Varnishing in process
This is what the gooseneck looks like. It's where the boom connects to the mast. It allows the boom to swing from side to side and also pivot up and down.
Gooseneck
When I do the engine work I want to try and re-align the engine to the prop shaft which will be a tight squeeze as there is very little room to work. Probably best that Linda is at home so she cant here the swearing! poor Saffy will have to put up with all that. I'll try and remember to take some photo's as I go along.
Here's me repairing a small blemish on the mainsail
Friday 2nd November...
DEAN - Sorry for the late report this week. As you know I'm home alone (boat alone) this week, I've had some issues with my phone and internet connections. As a brief out line: most marinas offer free Wi-Fi but the reason it's free is because it's useless! This marina at least acknowledges the fact that it's useless so you have to pay monthly from another provider. We have been using the 4G on the ipad and so far so good. Apart from the fact that O2 cut me off this week and denied all knowledge. Morons!
Anyway it's intermittent but working, just. So this week I've fitted the battery monitor that we picked up in La Linea. I'm pleased to say that it was a straight forward job and is working fine. At least now we will know the true state of the batteries, charge and discharge.

I also serviced the main engine as it's now done 1000 hours. (it had 300 on the clock when we bought Thésée). Draining the oil of course is difficult so a suction pump is needed to draw the old oil up the dip stick hole.
Oil suction pump at the ready
I also realigned the prop shaft as this is required at 1000 hours. This took about 4 hours in total as everything is difficult to get at.
The prop shaft joint is the shiny thing in the center
One of the more easy to get at engine mounts that has to be adjusted to align the prop shaft
I also changed the gear box oil, and inspected the water pump impeller, serviced the outboard engine and ordered the new cover for it. Hope fully Linda will arrive safely back on Monday with all my extra tools and spares ordered from the UK over the last few weeks.
Tuesday 6th November
Good news. Linda is back on board. We rented a car yesterday and nipped off to Malaga airport to collect the Admiral. She has brought lots of spares and tools back with her so today was spent sorting it all out. We tried the new flag and I fitted the new gas detector head which hopefully will sort out the false alarms we have been having. While we were out with Saffy this morning I spotted a bow ladder in the used section of the chandlery, 25 euro, bargain. No photo's I'm afraid, maybe later.

Other jobs since our last blog have been: Having a new outboard cover made, trying get a signal on the TV, which I've given up on. and I also fitted another passerelle socket in another place.
In the process of fitting the socket
All done, choice of two now.
Another one of the things brought back with Linda was a new Black country flag. the other was a little worse for wear!
They don't make em like they used too.
We have discovered the Almerimar Net whilst here. There is quite a community of people from houses, flats and boats that either live here or like us are here for the winter. There is a daily information call on the VHF radio with activities, parts for sale, lifts wanted etc. Anyway, it seems we will be quite busy over the winter with plenty going on. Which is why we have decided that the blog will be done on a Tuesday now, that looks to be our only free day. Hope you don't mind.
Wednesday 7th November
Just a bit more to add as we had a computer, printer and Captain meltdown last night.
A couple more jobs done in the last few days. With water and electricity being free in the marina we decided we should add a few items to the galley. We managed to get hold of a microwave which I've fitted above the stove and an electric ceramic hob which sits on top of the gas stove when were in a marina. Hopefully this will save a little on the gas, I'm not sure it's worth it though as the gas here is half the price of the UK when you can get it.

This is the new ensign that Linda brought back
One of the items that Linda brought back was a new red ensign, the other had frayed and faded. Today is a special day, one that we've been looking forward to for a long time. Aunty Von and Uncle Jim arrive today for a couple of days. They live in Spain about three hours away and are driving over to see us and help out at the quiz tonight.
This is the last blog post entitled Almerimar - October 2018
The next post will be called Almerimar - November 2018
